• A free energy based on a graph of pathways is used to model martensitic transitions with an unlimited set of variants. • An infimum operation on elastic and transformational potentials defines a free energy function of total strain only. • It allows for non-dissipative modeling of hysteresis, elastic anisotropy, and inertia for actual materials.
