• Functionalized nanodiamond/CPI nanocomposites were successfully fabricated. • Interfacial engineering improved nanodiamond dispersion in the CPI matrix. • Storage modulus increased while the thermal expansion coefficient decreased. • Thermal conductivity was enhanced through phonon transport pathways. • A low dielectric constant of 2.58 was achieved at low filler loading.
