• The correlation between ω phase precipitation behaviour and the evolution of mechanical properties has been established. • The effects of Nb content and rolling temperature on phase composition in the Zr-xNb-1Cu system are revealed. • The precipitation mechanism and coarsening kinetics of the ω phase during annealing in the Zr-xNb-1Cu system have been elucidated.
