• Sea–land breeze increased PM2.5 concentrations in five coastal cities of Korea. • Nitrate showed the largest increase among PM2.5 components during SLB periods. • SLB periods exhibited substantially higher aerosol liquid water content. • Increased ALWC promoted nitrate formation and rapid PM2.5 growth.
