Recently developed high-strength steels containing a metastable austenite phase have been reported to exhibit Lüders deformation. In this letter, we demonstrate that the magnitude of Lüders elongation strongly depends on the tensile direction. Tensile specimens were prepared from a commercially available stainless steel, referred to “R&P steel”, processed by rolling and annealing, with the tensile axis oriented at 0°, 45°, or 90° relative to the rolling direction. The 0° specimen exhibited nearly twice the Lüders elongation of the 45° and 90° specimens. In situ neutron diffraction measurements conducted during tensile deformation have revealed that this anisotropy originates from directional differences in the balance between deformation-induced martensitic transformation and plastic flow in austenite, leading to an optimum work-hardening response.
