Innovations in CO2 Separation Technologies Using Polyetherimide-Based Membranes

The increasing global CO2 emissions have led to significant environmental impacts accentuating the need for effective carbon capture technologies. Among various existing techniques, membrane based CO2 separation is emerging as a highly efficient, low-energy and environmentally friendly method. Polyetherimide (PEI) is a material with high CO2 affinity and robust mechanical property. The improvement of PEI-based membrane in order to overcome the trade-off effect for commercialization is under development. This review focuses on various engineered PEI-based membranes via different methods from early blending with other polymer materials to the relevant fabrication of mixed matrix by the integration with advanced 2D materials. Also, formation of hollow fiber membranes from PEI and blending/incorporation of different filler materials were reviewed. They were developed to improve the PEI efficiency and lifetime. Finally, the review ends with highlighting the challenges associated with these membranes for the industrial development along with future opportunities in large-scale applications.
