Localization and identification of radioactive sources is a key issue for operators in nuclear facilities and homeland security. We propose a γ-ray detection system without moving parts, based on a scintillator crystal read out by an array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) located at its base. Simulation studies show that the system detects sparse radioactive sources with energies from tens of keV to 1 MeV in a 360° azimuth around it and thus it’s ideal for homeland security. The realized prototype of the system shows an azimuthal angle resolution from around 8° to 13° depending on the source energy. The system could be carried on a stationary or mobile platform.
