• Synthesis and hydrogenolysis of α-O-4 lignin model compounds including novel ones. • Kinetic studies reveal substituent effects on Pd-catalyzed hydrogenolysis. • Ortho-methoxy groups on the aryl moiety accelerate hydrogenolysis. • Methoxy and especially hydroxy groups on the benzyl moiety inhibit hydrogenolysis. • Insights into selective α-O-4 bond cleavage for lignin depolymerization.
