Integrated Motor Drives: A Review of Recent Developments, Enabling Technologies, and Future Research Directions

Abstract

The integration of electric machines, power electronics, and controls into a single unit with common cooling and packaging is termed an integrated motor drive (IMD). Integration with the load is also becoming increasingly common in many applications, so, for example, the fan blades in a fan drive become integrated with the electric drive. Research into integrated drives and enabling technologies is both extensive and growing. Six years have passed since the last major review paper on the topic was published, and many significant new products have been introduced during this time in a wide variety of fields incorporating IMD-based configurations. Simultaneously, there have been major advances in materials, semiconductor technology, manufacturing methods, and cooling technologies, which have opened up many new opportunities for future IMD improvements. This article reviews these advances and discusses the impact they will have upon new IMD systems. It also looks forward and presents a longer-term vision of how IMDs will further evolve during the coming decades.
