Lipids are a diverse group of macromolecules that function in signaling pathways and as components of cellular and organellar membranes, among others. In the tenth installment of the TrendsTalk Special series: Scientific figure development, we hear the following thoughts of scientists as they create figures containing lipids and membranes: what aspects do you consider when generating a figure that contains chemical structures? How do you decide how to represent the lipid and/or membrane structure(s) (i.e., level of detail, color, pathways involved, etc.)? What program(s) do you prefer for generating such figures and why? The scientists we hear from in this installment are Xinyu Li and Ye Tian, cofirst author and primary author of 'Mitochondrial-to-nuclear communication in aging: an epigenetic perspective' [1.] (Figure 1), Xiaochun Li, primary author of 'Mechanistic insights into the generation and transduction of Hedgehog signaling' [2.] (Figure 5), and Sarah Barger, cofirst author of 'Coupling lipid synthesis with nuclear envelope remodeling' [3.] (Figures 1 and 2).
