Integrating passive design principles in the retrofitting of educational buildings

Educational buildings are major energy consumers, necessitating the adoption of effective retrofit strategies to enhance their sustainability performance. This study examines the challenges and effectiveness of integrating passive design principles in retrofitting existing educational facilities, with particular emphasis on energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and operational performance. A quantitative survey research design was adopted, targeting built environment professionals, including architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, project managers, and sustainability consultants involved in educational projects in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Using Slovin's formula, a sample size of 261 was derived from a population of 750. Of the distributed questionnaires, 207 valid responses were obtained and analyzed. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, such as percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations, alongside exploratory factor analysis to identify key dimensions influencing passive design integration. The findings indicate that high initial capital costs, limited stakeholder awareness, and inadequate technical expertise are the most critical barriers to adoption. Despite these constraints, passive design strategies were found to be highly effective in improving thermal comfort, enhancing energy efficiency, reducing long-term operational costs, and strengthening institutional reputation. These findings highlight the strategic importance of passive design in improving the performance of existing educational buildings. The study recommends targeted capacity-building initiatives, enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of supportive policy and financial incentive frameworks to encourage the broader adoption of passive design principles in educational building retrofits.
