• Comprehensive taxon sampling of Acanthistius, including eight of 11 nominal species. • Monophyletic Acanthistius, with an origin in the mid-Eocene to early Miocene. • Diversification within Acanthistius driven by transoceanic dispersal. • Acanthistius and Trachypoma are placed outside the Serranoidei, within Perciformes. • Using morphological and molecular evidence, we include two family diagnoses.
