• RS-SRPB was developed to intensify HCl-catalyzed fructose dehydration to 5-HMF. • 5-HMF yield of 90.98% were achieved within 69.5 s at a high CFru of 1.0 mol/L. • A STY of 5.89 kg/(L·h) was obtained, two orders of magnitude higher than in stirred tank reactors. • ANN-based predictive model was developed with deviations less than ± 15%. • RS-SRPB offered a promising solution for the intensification of reaction-extraction coupling processes.
