• Exercise combined with hypoxia may serve as a complementary strategy for Parkinson’s disease treatment. • An inter-effort recovery approach (exercise in normoxia, recovery in hypoxia) was tested to minimize the potential drawbacks of low oxygen availability on exercise outcomes. • Inter-effort recovery hypoxia did not impair the positive effects of a single treadmill session on gait in people with Parkinson’s disease. • Long-term studies are needed to determine the clinical relevance of this approach.
