• SVUV-PIMS was employed to analyze volatile evolution during coal/NH3 co-pyrolysis • NH3 interactions with oxygen-containing groups promote nitrogen-containing species formation. • NH3 exerts temperature-dependent effects on hydrocarbon formation. • NH3 enhances nitrogen retention and promotes N-heterocycle formation in char.
