Abstract

Abstract

En 中文
Patients with a headache disorder may benefit from an interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive patient education/counseling, medication management, biomechanical and social support, and procedural/surgical interventions. A truly complete evaluation and management of the patient with chronic headache cannot be accomplished with a single physician or discipline and instead requires the input of multiple different physician specialties, therapists, pharmacists, and psychologists in a coordinated fashion. Physician specialists help with establishing the chronic headache diagnosis. Physiatrists, neurologists, interventional pain specialists, and orofacial pain specialists can offer procedural interventions as indicated. Pharmacists help with initial medication review, patient education, monitoring side effects, and titration of abortive or prophylactic headache medications. Therapists, including physical therapists and occupational therapists, offer manual therapies and adjunctive modalities to help reduce headache pain. Psychologists can address the psychosocial component of a headache disorder, including sleep habits or coping mechanisms that could be triggering or worsening the headache disorder. Each member of the interdisciplinary team offers unique, valuable contributions to the diagnosis and management of patients suffering from complex and/or refractory headaches.
