The depletion of fossil fuels and the growing environmental crisis have stimulated intensive interest in sustainable hydrogen production. Herein; CoFe-LDH/NiOOH heterostructures were successfully fabricated on nickel foam via a two-step electrodeposition method. The strong interfacial coupling between CoFe-LDH and NiOOH is proposed to induce electronic modulation at the heterointerface and may facilitate the generation of high-valance active species during electrocatalysis; thereby contributing to the enhanced bifunctional electrocatalytic performance. As a result; Co1Fe1-LDH/NiOOH exhibits the best bifunctional electrocatalytic performance; requiring overpotentials of only 228 and 55 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); respectively. When used as both the anode and cathode; the assembled Co1Fe1-LDH/NiOOH‖Co1Fe1-LDH/NiOOH electrolyzer requires only 1.529 V to deliver 10 mA cm−2 and maintains excellent stability at a higher current density of 100 mA cm⁻² for 100 h. This work demonstrates that heterostructure engineering is an effective strategy for developing efficient and durable non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.
