• Interfacial potential well engineering enhances hydrogen storage in waste-derived porous composites. • ZIF-8/PSAC achieves a hydrogen uptake of 5.71 wt% at 50 bar. • RDG and EDA reveal polarization-enhanced adsorption via Zn2+–π electronic coupling. • Hierarchical pores and interfacial potential wells overcome limits of single waste-derived materials.
