• Rock major elements, not trace elements, are the dominant geologic factors regulating soil microbial communities. • This geologic influence is indirect, operating solely by altering soil properties, and is strictly depth dependent. • Integrating geologic properties significantly enhances the Critical Zone framework for explaining soil microbial structure and function.
