• The intrinsic corrosion role of Ce was isolated using a pure iron alloy system. • Optimal Ce (0.042 wt%) refines inclusions and suppresses micro-galvanic corrosion. • Ce enhances corrosion resistance through synergistic inclusion modification and α-FeOOH-rich rust formation.
