Abstract

• A process–property relationship for IN718 manufactured by PBF-LB/M is established for dual-spot beam shaping strategies, linking beam configuration, melt pool thermal behavior, and as-built microstructural characteristics. • Introducing a Y-offset prevents melt pool merging, enabling successful fabrication of volumetric parts with porosity below 0.2% (infill region). • Melt pool geometry is strongly affected by spot positioning. At a Y-offset of 0.13 mm, the melt pool becomes narrower and deeper, approaching the single Gaussian beam case. • The modified melt pool geometry reduces anisotropy, with the texture index decreasing from 7.4 to 2.1. Grain size is refined from 550 µm to 198 µm, confirming strong microstructural control via the dual-spot strategy. • As an inherent feature of the dual-spot strategy with dual-exposure tracks, the volumetric build rate increases markedly from 4.2 mm³/s to 16.4 mm³/s for samples produced using the diagonal dual (M+M) configuration with an X-offset of 0.08 mm and a Y-offset of 0.13 mm, corresponding to an improvement of approximately 390%.
