• ZnO, CuO, and ZnO–CuO thin films were synthesized by USP. • CuO nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on ZnO nanorods. • Electrical conductivity improved with increasing Cu content. • Optical band gap decreased from 3.23 eV to 3.11 eV. • Films show high transparency and potential for TCO applications.
