• Shear-mode crack thresholds of D2 wheel steel were measured under combined compressive–shear loading. • Non-propagating cracks were obtained via a compression–torsion load-shedding method. • The intrinsic shear-mode thresholds ΔKⅡ, eff, th and ΔKⅢ, eff, th were determined by decoupling friction effects. • Cracks bypassed hard pearlite and propagated preferentially into soft proeutectoid ferrite. • High-angle grain boundaries caused crack twisting, energy dissipation, and Mode I branching.
