• Corrosion evolves from metastable/stable pitting to passivation, then to stable pitting with increasing spray cycles. • Increased point defects accelerate charge transfer and weaken repassivation property, promoting pitting corrosion. • Cation vacancy accumulation at the coating/passive film interface induces film dissolution and pitting propagation.
