• A one-dimensional freeze-thaw device with adjustable limited displacement function was proposed. • There are significant differences in the freezing depth and water distribution patterns of soil samples under different displacement boundaries. • The higher cold-end temperature and initial moisture content results in a greater frost-heaving force under the fixed displacement boundary.
