• The ionic resorcin[4]arene-derived interlayer-engineered PA membrane was prepared. • The ionic interlayer regulated the PA charge property and pore structure. • Anionic interlayer produced a thick and smooth PA layer with enhanced negative charge. • Cationic interlayer yielded a thinner, nanostriped PA layer with moderate charge. • Cationic interlayer engineered PA showed high selectivity for Cl−/SO42− and Li+/Mg2+.
