• Woody peat and its humate promoted transformation of crystalline Fe oxides into amorphous phases. • Fe oxides fractionation effectively modulates Cd/As availability in flooded paddy soils. • Decreased Fe plaque formation reduced Cd retention while enhancing As sequestration. • Distinct variations in available Cd/As & CdIP/AsIP effectively governed Cd/As uptake by rice.
