• We unpack the divergent views of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in policy and media settings in Ghana. • There is a politics of ASM licence as an end for responsible gold mining. • Licence acquisition is not an automatic indicator for environmental protection. • More attention should be given to both mining licence and operating permit in the discourse of environmental sustainability in ASM.
