This paper introduces and investigates the use of a Java Iconic Visual Environment for Simulation (JIVESim). JIVESim is an iconic modelling environment for discrete-event simulation. The paper will give an overview of JIVESim and its architecture, which consists of atomic icons and integrated icons. The advantages of Java language that support discrete event simulation will be discussed. The aim of the paper is to address some of the challenges that computer simulation faces. These challenges are complexity, inaccessibility, and high cost. Related aspects of design and implementation are presented and critiqued. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
