Abstract

Nitrile rubber is widely used in the fields of automobiles, aviation, medical treatment, food and so on. And the problems caused by its odor have drawn more and more attention. In this study, the solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) technology was combined with the comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC & times;GC-TOF/MS) technology to characterize the volatile compounds in imported nitrile rubbers with different acrylonitrile contents and identify the main substances contributing to the odor. The research results showed that 18 volatile compounds were detected in medium-low acrylonitrile rubber and 14 volatile compounds were detected in medium-high acrylonitrile rubber by one-dimensional chromatography. There were 22 volatile compounds in total for both of them, among which 11 odor-contributing compounds were screened out. Moreover, the main substances with characteristic odors (sulfur-containing compounds and aromatic hydrocarbons) and their sources were analyzed. Two-dimensional chromatography detected 227 kinds of volatile compounds in medium-low acrylonitrile rubber and 140 kinds in medium-high acrylonitrile rubber respectively, with a total of 263 kinds of volatile compounds. In total,234 kinds of volatile compounds were detected in medium-low acrylonitrile rubber and 145 kinds in medium-high acrylonitrile rubber by the two methods combined, with a grand total of 271 kinds of volatile compounds. These compounds were mainly composed of benzene series compounds, alkanes, nitrogen-containing compounds and alcohols. The combination of the two technologies in this study can complement each other's results, enabling a more comprehensive acquisition of information on the volatile compounds in nitrile rubber and the compounds contributing to the odor. It can provide data support for reducing the odor of nitrile rubber and improving the production process.
