• Laser induced ultrasonic surface wave generation was explored using diffractive optical element. • Using DOE a single optical source was converted into multiple sources. • The effect of number of sources, types of sources and laser power was explored on the generation efficiency of SAW waves. • Line sources had narrow bandwidth compared to point sources. • Increasing line width increased the quality factor of the signal.
