• Alexandrium catenella produces toxins that are transferred through the benthic food web. • Perumytilus pupuratus and Concholepas concholepas accumulate toxin levels in their tissues that significantly exceed the regulatory limit (800 μg STX eq. kg-1). • C. concholepas uses prey containing paralyzing toxins as a food source. • The distribution of toxins in the tissues of C. concholepas indicates that the most toxic analogues accumulate in the foot of the snails. • The proliferation of A. catenella in southern Chile may have negative ecological and socioeconomic repercussions for coastal areas.
