• Pressure profile matching is possible by directly applying the desired load profile. • Load-distributing supports can control the deformation of a flexible bearing pad. • Small deviations from the nominal load profile help a flexible bearing pad to adapt. • Flexible bearing pads can maintain an efficient film profile up to large curvatures. • Three design rules can be defined that describe a feasible operating range for flexible pads.
