Abstract

Abstract

We present a straightforward and effective post-fabrication compensation method to achieve polarization-independent coherent detection in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The approach exploits the adjustment of the local oscillator (LO) state of polarization (SOP), combined with thermal tuning of an integrated polarization beam splitter (PBS), to compensate for fabrication-induced polarization sensitiveness. A compact analytical model is developed, based on the measured TE and TM PIC responses to the signal and the LO, to identify the optimal PBS operating point and LO SOP that minimize the beat-power variation to the signal SOP. Experimental results confirm the predicted trends, showing that the receiver sensitivity variation across different signal polarizations is reduced from 8 dB to 3 dB for a BER of 10−2. This technique reduces performance variability in integrated coherent receivers due to fabrication tolerances, enabling the recovery of PICs that would otherwise be discarded. Its simplicity and generality make it applicable to a wide range of coherent integrated receiver architectures, and compatible with existing component-level tuning strategies.
