Long-Lasting Anticorrosion and Wear Resistance of pH-Responsive UiO-66@8HQ-PDA/Boron Nitride-Reinforced Epoxy Coating

Coupled tribo-corrosion severely threatens offshore oil and gas pipelines, whereas conventional organic coatings often fail prematurely due to insufficient barrier properties and wear resistance. Herein, a hierarchical UiO-66@8HQ-PDA/hBN–OH nanohybrid was fabricated by anchoring corrosion inhibitor-loaded metal–organic frameworks onto self-lubricating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets and incorporated into a waterborne epoxy (WEP) matrix. The obtained WEP composite coating exhibited pH-responsive release behavior, enabling localized active corrosion protection at damaged regions. After 80 days of immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution, the coating maintained a low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z|0.01 Hz) of 5.3 × 109 Ω·cm2, nearly 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the pristine WEP coating. Meanwhile, the average friction coefficient decreased from 0.296 to 0.139, accompanied by significantly reduced wear-track width and depth. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of h-BN-mediated barrier/lubrication behavior and inhibitor release from the UiO-66 nanocontainer, which together suppress electrolyte penetration and mitigate tribo-corrosion damage. This work provides an effective strategy for developing multifunctional waterborne epoxy coatings in harsh tribo-corrosive environments.
