Long-range extended chains arising from polymerization-driven spontaneous assembly

Coupling of noncovalent interactions between chains to monomer addition in solution can form long, highly conductive polymer nanoribbons with ordered backbones. Chen et al. showed that n-polybenzodifurandione nanoribbons grew spontaneously when monomers transferred electrons to the growing polymer, which led to n-type doping and also activated the monomer for oxidative polymerization. The conductivity of thin films of the aligned nanoribbons (more than 10⁴ Siemens per centimeter) rivaled that of metals. —Phil Szuromi
