• The 1943 Bengal famine was a “man-made famine” caused by wartime policy restrictions. • An estimated three million people died due to the famine. • We compare health outcomes of people from exposed and non-exposed states. • Women exposed to the famine are 3-4 cm shorter than those not exposed. • Famine exposure adversely affected physical health of women and mental health of men.
