Abstract

Abstract

Arbitrary waveform generators (AWGs) are essential instruments in diverse applications, including radar systems, wireless communications, and optical sensing. With the increasing requirements for signal quality, there is a growing demand for AWGs with low spurious levels and high fidelity. However, current arbitrary waveform synthesis architectures often suffer from phase truncation errors due to limited storage capacity, which leads to degraded spurious performance. Although existing optimization methods can enhance spurious performance to some extent, they are often dependent on the waveform type and may introduce fidelity loss. This article critically analyzes the limitations of existing waveform synthesis methods and proposes a novel arbitrary waveform synthesis approach based on adaptive interpolation. Different from conventional lookup table (LUT)-based methods, the proposed interpolation technique reduces phase truncation errors during the phase-to-amplitude conversion (PAC) process. By adaptively selecting interpolation points based on the correlation between waveform samples, the method addresses distortion in regions with steep gradients, thereby minimizing interpolation-induced fidelity loss. Experimental results demonstrate that this method significantly suppresses spurious levels and improves the fidelity of the synthesized arbitrary waveforms.
