• Ant-mound surface soils hold less organic and labile carbon than biocrusted soils. • Microbial carbon use efficiency is lower in ant-mound than in surrounding soils. • In lab incubations, mound soils emit more N2O and take up less CH4 than biocrusts. • Ant nesting coincides with coarser, more nutrient-poor biocrust surface soils.
