Abstract

4G mobile systems are loosely defined as future mobile systems with high throughput capability, and a physical layer that can seamlessly work in a heterogeneous environment. A CDMA based system is foreseen. It is possible that an SDR based physical layer in such systems is capable of providing an adaptive physical layer in which the physical layer parameters can be chosen based on channel conditions. In this paper we take IEEE 802.11b in infrastructure mode configuration as a model with appropriate extensions as expected in a 4G system, and simulate a wireless hotspot. We propose that power limited mobiles will act like species in evolution, in selecting appropriate MAC strategies and physical layer parameters in order to be able to send maximum number of packets (similar to species in evolution spreading their DNA), and to conserve their battery power (i.e. extend their life span).
