Research highlights • Micro-macro linkages provided by granular micromechanics approach (GMA) predict rarely reported macroscale chirality due to coupling of stretching deformations and micro-rotation leading to an extended micropolar model. • GMA based micropolar model is leveraged to conceive a 2D chiral metamaterial of granular motif using pre-designed grain-pair behavior. • Efficacy of GMA micro-macro linkages and predicted micropolar verified through full-field micro-scale finite element (FE) simulations based upon classical continuum model.
