• A site-to-grid framework reconstructs maize attainable yield at 0.5° resolution. • National mean attainable yield estimated by the optimal LightGBM model reached 12.2 t·ha−1 during 2001–2014. • Accumulated solar radiation and growing period length dominate yield variability. • Actual yield achieved only 36.6% of attainable yield, leaving a 63.4% gap. • Attainable yields increase most under low-emission and adaptive management, but substantial gaps (∼44%) remain by 2050.
