• Straw return with optimized N raised yield by 3.4% and net income by 54.5% • Straw return increased grain N, P, K uptake by 10.1%, 8.2%, and 6.5% respectively • Grain N uptake showed strongest association with yield in path modeling analysis • Combined straw-N management stabilized yield across years with varying climate • Optimized N (360 kg ha⁻¹) with straw matched conventional N (450 kg ha⁻¹) yield
