• Models with covariates made management effects on soil health easier to detect. • Humid dairy farm soils have better soil structure and higher SOC than semi-arid ones. • In rainfed systems, soil health was generally better with grazing than forage crops. • Dryland farming had a lower SOC than irrigated crops in semi-arid areas. • Tillage and reduced tillage had similar SOC and aggregate levels across regions.
