• Recyclable Mg@SHC/CS hydrogel beads were fabricated from waste seaweed, magnesite, and chitosan. • Site energy distribution analysis revealed heterogeneous binding with preferential high-energy site occupation. • DFT and IGMH calculations identified Mg–O centers, –COOH, and –NH2/–NH3+ as key active sites. • Cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment pinpointed chitosan and Mg@SHC precursor as environmental hotspots.
