• Five case studies quantify materials retained, removed, and added in refurbishments. • Original structure retention ranged from 60% to 98% of initial mass. • New additions used lighter assemblies, cutting intensity by up to 42%. • Structural elements dominate total mass; interior finishes contribute less. • Embodied GHG of final buildings exceeded that of the original building in all cases.
