Abstract

Traditional accelerator-based pulsed neutron sources are limited by the time duration, making high-resolution spectroscopy for fast neutrons difficult to conduct. Laser-plasma accelerator-based photonuclear neutron sources have ultrashort beam durations. However, accurate measurement of the neutron energy spectra with high resolution requires investigation. In this study, a laser-driven ultrashort neutron source was combined with single-neutron-counting time-of-flight technology to precisely measure energy spectra. This method resulted in a neutron source with a 2.18-ns duration, a neutron yield of $$(1.63 \pm 0.39) \times 10^6$$ per shot, and an energy resolution of 7% at 0.5 MeV with a 5.4 m flight distance. Using Monte Carlo simulations, the stability of the neutron spectrum distribution and the feasibility of the method were demonstrated. This ultrashort neutron source with precise spectrum measurement has significant potential for realizing fast neutron resonance absorption spectroscopy.\query{Please check the edit made in the article title.}
