Though regularly identified as integral to human flourishing in participatory studies and human development literature, social connectedness remains a ‘missing dimension’ of poverty that is underrepresented within multi-topic household surveys. Recognizing that space in these surveys is limited, this paper proposes a concise, four-question survey module that encompasses the full range of social connectedness’ sub-components and abides by current measurement guidelines. Since social connectedness only appears in two national multidimensional poverty measures, we develop our survey module instead by reviewing social connectedness indicators that appear within OECD and international multi-topic and time use surveys. Drawing upon this precedence, we construct a survey module that assesses respondents’ ‘Time spent with others,’ ‘Social support,’ ‘Satisfaction with relationships,’ and ‘Sense of belonging.’ We then consider how these questions might be incorporated into measures of multidimensional poverty or well-being by arranging them into indicators and implementing dimensional cut-off. We conclude with a brief discussion about the limitations, future directions, and policy applications of our survey module.
