• Freshwater aquaculture is essential for food security and the sustainable development of global aquaculture and currently there are great concerns about potential threats from climate change • Impact of climate change on aquaculture is observed by incorporating climatic factors together with other freshwater aquaculture production factors into a classic Cobb-Douglas production function. • Overall, climate change has an inverted Cobb-Douglas U-shape impact on Chinese freshwater aquaculture production • Impact exhibits spatial heterogeneity across the coastal and inland provinces and across the northern and southern provinces in China
