Mechanical response and energy absorption of X-shaped auxetic honeycomb sandwich beams under three-point bending

• A novel X-shaped auxetic honeycomb sandwich beam with enhanced bending resistance is proposed. • The coupling effects of core orientation and loading position on bending performance are systematically revealed. • Orientation-dependent deformation mechanisms are identified to optimize load-bearing and energy absorption. • Gradient core distribution and face-sheet strengthening suppress local indentation and improve structural stability. • The X-shaped auxetic beam outperforms conventional re-entrant honeycomb beam in stability and energy absorption.
